‘The Surfer’

The poem ‘The Surfer’ by Judith Wright is a strong and powerful portrayal of a free and savagely determined view of the world. It is about the sea and the surfer who is game with the sea, it is also a vivid illustration of the strong will and harshness of the shore. It is written in the modern context being set in the present time. The poem starts in a spirited ride for the joy of the surfer but as the poem flows night falls and we are left to feel the animal like savagery of the sea.

A young man is forcing his way along the waves as he “thrusts his joy against the weight of the sea,. An emotion is used to portray his surf board to portray his feelings not only towards his board but also towards the sea in general. Wright’s use of metaphor in this line as seen by her use of ‘joy’ and ‘weight’ is used to describe the power behind the sea and the delight in the surfer.

Wright often uses verbs throughout the poem to illustrate the physical movement of the sea and the surfer. ‘climbed through, slid under’. She then uses an abstracts metaphorical description ‘hawthorn hedges in spring, thorns in the face sting’ to portray the sting if the water in his face and the way the wave is similar to hedges as they obscure your vision from what rests beyond them. The use of rhyme in ‘sting’ and ‘spring’ helps to smooth out the description and add familiarity to the words.Write a research paper on The surfer By Judith Wright - analysis <br/>

His body is represented by his ‘brown strength’ and his movements through the waves by the ‘through the hollow and coil’ this is an excellent example of symbolism by which she uses ‘brown’ as to describe his tan body. The repetition of the word ‘muscle’ is meant to add a link between the surfer and the sea, they are two of the same body. ‘Mortal, masterful, frail’ the surfer is human which means he can easily die and although he is very talented at his task he still is fragile compared to the sea.

‘Turn home, the sun goes down ; swimmer, turn home’ an unknown person/ force possibly the author addresses the surfer telling him it’s time to return to shore, night approaches ‘last leaf of gold vanishes from the sea-curve’ the sun is setting and the surfer senses that he must turn back in. Metaphor is used in this to add a magical essence to the line ‘leaf of gold’. Finally as the sun sets the surfer returns ‘take the big roller’s shoulder, speed and swerve’ he makes his way along a big barrelling wave back while the simile ‘like a gull diving’ is used to show his path forward.

Animal symbolism and onomatopoeia is used in the third stanza to show the power of the sea and it’s personality of cruelty and savageness. ‘on the sand the grey-wolf lies snarling’. ‘waves hair’ shows personification in the wave giving it’s froth hair ‘bones they worry in the wolfs teeth’. The personification is repeated ‘drops there and snatches again, drops and snatches it’s broken toys, it’s whitened pebbles and shells’ the reference to the broken toys and how it picks them up and then uncaring throughs them down again suggests it personality is one of little value or respect.

During this poem Wright often uses the use of verbs such as ‘thrust, slid, climbed, swimming, diving, swerve etc’ she does this t give the reader a sense of motion and movement, the continuing movements of the waves .the use of visual images throughout the poem also add a very strong mental emotion and feeling to this poem with lines such as ‘on the sand the grey-wolf lies snarling’ and hawthorn hedges in spring’

I think that this work is an elegant portrayal of a game between an surfer and the sea, he and it are one yet the sea is immeasurably stronger and wilder than he, he can only hope to ride the sea and must in turn return to shore when the sun sets while the sea rages on throughout the night. The portrayal of the poem is excellent with the line ‘mortal, masterful, frail’ describing the surfers skill yet he is still a small consequence to the sea. I believe the purpose of the this poem is to show the immense power of the sea above the skilful yet ultimately frail mortal man.
