Theory of Forms

In our bodies or in our minds there lye’s the answer to all knowledge. Even though we can not see knowledge we do know knowledge that it is there. Our senses interrupt the very underlying workings of our thoughts. The forms make us misinterpret many things that would otherwise seem real. This is our hindrance, our prison to which we are embodied for life.

Forms are the matter that makes what we can not see, to become real, or what our senses respond to the experience of forms. Our minds perceive such properties as triangular or circular. Even though we don’t have any perception of them, forms are the matter our minds perceive as reality. Even though we never actually experience them, true knowledge is our perception of the forms themselves.

According to Socrates the forms do not change, they are immortal. The forms are idea of the world and all its mysteriousness. Socrates believed that every soul has all the knowledge of the world, and mankind only forgets it at birth; mankind must regain their knowledge by learning and remembering what they had forgot.

Socrates believes the forms are unchanging and remain the same, only the body changes. The forms which are invisible to the human eye, can only be seen or touched by the soul. Since they are thoughts, then they are not of real matter. These forms are unseen and untouched as they are thought to be of immortal eminence, which can never die.

The soul is also thought to be invisible because it is an unseen entity. And that it uses the body as an instrument of its gain for knowledge. The soul is immortal, thought to as divine as the gods them selves; the body is believed to be the mortal imprisonment in which our souls are kept.

Socrates believes the nature of the soul while in the body will follow him into the next life. “I mean to say that men who have followed after gluttony, and wantonness, and drunkenness, and have had no thought of avoiding them, would pass into asses and animals of that sort (Gracyk, 4).”

The essence of something is what makes it what it is and everything has its opposites. If one has tallness he may not have shortness at the same time. He may have shortness when tallness leaves and is no longer, he then will have shortness or vise-versa.

“simmias is said to be great, and is also said to be small, because he is in a mean between them, exceeding the smallness of the one by his greatness, and allowing the greatness of the other to exceed his smallness(Gracyk, 0).”

Another way to look at it would be to think of a rabbit, it exists and goes about his activities because the rabbit is built the way he needs to be; the rabbit’s parts are where they need to be and function perfectly. The form of the rabbit is the basic structure in which the rabbit, though not perfectly, are needed in order to work. Also if an object breaks apart, the object will still contain objectness, but the particle that broke off is not. So the essence of the object may still be there, but the part that breaks apart is no more.

To conclude, The Theory of Forms, are the thoughts in our minds in which we do not see, but rather we know of knowledge and aware that knowledge exists. “The form of a thing, we are told, is its essence and primary substance. Forms are substantial, although universals are not. When a man makes a brazen sphere, both the matter and the form already existed, and all that he does is bring them together; the man does not make the form, any more than he makes the brass”

Forms are not thoughts in our minds, but reality apart from our minds.
