Looking for Alibrandi is a book about a seventeen-year-old ethnic girl, who lives with her mum. They live in outer Sydney. Josie goes to a school where she fells like she is the odd one out, being ethnic, plus all the other students come from wealthy backgrounds. She only goes to the school because she got a scholarship. Josie has many different problems but believes that she is the only one with problems.

Josie has many problems in the novel but believes no one else could have any of there own problems. When John Barton died she didn’t mourn or cry for him, she was angry that he threw away everything he had going for him, like a good future and a father with lots of money. She was self-centered by the way she simplified Jacobs’s life by saying he doesn’t have to live by any rules.

Josie does have lots of problems in her life, like not having a father figure in her childhood and not knowing what he Evan looked like. Her main problem is her culture. Josie feels ruled and stuck by her culture, always having to obey tits rules and tradition. Her Nonna tries to force Josie to live by tradition and is always on her case. Other problem she faces is from other students, like Ivy who she is always competing with. When one student calls her a wog she gets very offended and breaks the girls nose. She also had girls coming up to her when she was young and calling her a wog, which made her want to kill herself.

Josie has lots of problems in her life but does change through the book by realizing that she is self-centered. She Mali changes when John dies because she realizes that other people have problems too. Also When she learns Nonnas secret about Marcus Sanford, she realizes that Nonna went through the same as her mother would of.

Josie has most of the problems in the book but a lot of the other characters in the book have their own problems too. John Barton is the school captain and wins a lot of things. His future is practically planned by his father. His father only loves him when he wins everything but if he doesn’t win anything he hates him. This is what drives John to suicide.

Christina has had problems all her life, when she got pregnant at 17 her father threw her out of the house and was forced to make a living on her own. Her father was a bastard to her her whole life and she never knew why. The real reason was because of Nonnas secret. Her secret that Marcus Sanford was Christina’s real father was the reason her other dad hated her so much.

Jacob had a few problems of his own like after his mother died he never wanted to meet anyone else’s mother. He also gets offended easily by simple things.

Michael who left Christina after he found out she was pregnant was under the impression that she was going to get an abortion. So when he came to visit 17 years later he found out he had a daughter. At first Josie didn’t want to know him but they eventually became good friends and even love each other. Michael’s main problem was that he left and never tried to contact Christina.

Josie thought her life was the worst out of anyone and thought everyone else had no problems at all. She always thought John’s life was perfect and that he had a good future ahead of him. But when he died she realized that he did have problems too and so did everyone else. Like Nonna’s secret, which at first pissed Josie off because Nonna always treated Christina badly when she was really a hypocrite. But in the end Josie realizes she was self-centered and she did change.
