Boycott of 105

One major external problem was the boycott of 105. America decided to permanently exclude Chinese immigrants from entering America. Understandably, this angered the Chinese very much, because the Chinese obviously strengthened the American economy. The Chinese built most of the buildings and railroads in America, and without them America would not have been as strong as it was. In response to the drastic actions taken by the Americans, the Qing Dynasty decided to permanently boycott all American goods. Unfortunately this only made the Chinese poorer, and in need of vital goods. At the end, the Qinq dynasty forced the Chinese people to stop the boycott.

Unequal Treaties

During the late 1800’s a series of Treaty’s were formed. This treaty’s were between China and the Western countries, including Japan. This treaty’s occurred during the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic. This treaty’s were known as the “unequal treaties.” The first major treaty signed was the Sino-British Treaty of Najing, signed after the Opium War. Many treaty’s with the same nature as the prior followed. This treaty established China’s inferior status in a community with other countries. This allowed extraterritoriality and negotiated tariffs with Great Britain. Although the British were allowed to impose this on the Chinese, the Chinese were not allowed to impose it on the British. The Treaty of Wangxia with America (1844) and the Treaty of Whampoa with France (1844) soon followed. This treaty’s also enforced the law that the Chinese had to pay for the war debts, because they lost. Because the Chinese were suffering so greatly because of this treaty’s, Russia saw an ample opportunity to gain power. Russia conquered much land from China, and settled them in peaceful settlements.
