“Mountain Lion”
“Mountain Lion” by D.H. Lawrence is an excellent poem about the poet walking along a snow-covered mountain in Mexico. He comes across two strangers who have killed a lion and are taking it home with them as a trophy. However the poet doesn’t agree and doesn’t think the lion should have been killed. The poet eventually finds the cave where the lion lived and felt that the earth could spare a few million humans, but that the lion didn’t have to die. This poem, I feel, would be good for future S classes.
One of the reasons I think it should be used for future classes is because of its excellent language. He uses repetition well, especially in the third stanza of the poem. This stanza is telling us of their situation,
“They hesitate.

This helps to show that it is a tense and awkward situation and the use of short sentences helps to highlight this it’s also tense because of the fact that the other people have a gun, but the poet has no gun to defend himself with. Another good use of language is the use of alliteration in verse 10, when he is describing the dead lion, it allows us to see the dead lions cold limp face vividly. He says,
“frost of her face” and,
“ bright face, bright as frost.” He also uses Spanish in the poem,
“ Que tiene, amigo?
Leon-”,
This is good because it adds an extra bit of dramatic intensity to the poem, by the fact that he could have been saying anything to the poet.
Not only should the poem be used in the future for its excellent language, it also has a good plot; it progresses well through the poem. It starts in the mountains on a vanishing trail, then it goes onto them finding the lion killers and seeing the lion. After that the lion gets described,
“Her round, fine-fashioned head,” and, “Dark, keen, fine eyes in the brilliant frost of her face.” Followed by the poet finding the cave where the lion once lived but doesn’t know because it is dead. Finally it talks about the beautiful white landscape of the mountains covered in trees that will no longer be roamed by the lion, the white snow and the trees make you think of Christmas a time of joy, however this was not a time of joy.
The beautifully described setting enhances the good plot. Its set in a distant old mountain in the Lobo Canyons in Mexico, during January. The mountain is still covered by snow and trees are dotted all over the mountain,
“Climbing through the January snow.” This is the first setting described, they then go into a cave where it is described, and that it was the lion’s cave and that the lion will no longer jump around it.
This setting is brought to life by the excellent imagery. The poet is good at imagery in all his poems, but he is very good in this one. When he tells us about the body of the dead lion, the way he describes it lets the picture of the lion’s dead limp body come to life and makes us kind of sad,
“Frost of her face” and “Beautiful dead eyes.” Both of these allow us to see the lions face, limp, cold and her eyes wide open but not moving or seeing. At the end of the poem he also describes the green trees on the opposite steep in the snow-covered mountain,
“Green trees motionless standing in snow like a Christmas toy.” In conclusion this poem uses its excellent use of language, the great plot, the setting and the excellent imagery to make it come to life. These points are why I think it should be used by future classes to learn.
