Brian Friel has made it clear to the readers through the title The Freedom of the City that this is a play about freedom. More precisely, it is about the lack of social, economic and political freedom of those people at the bottom strata of society. These poor and powerless people are represented by the three main characters Lily, Michael and Skinner. Although they all aspire to be free, they attempt to achieve their freedom in different ways. Nevertheless, none of the three characters will succeed, and the play seems to make the point that freedom may be an impossible dream in a society where the poor are always being suppressed by the powerful.

All three characters attended the civil rights march, but what each of them want is different. Michael, being the most outspoken and enthusiastic participant, sees freedom as having “a decent job, a decent place to live in, a decent town to bring up [his] children”. Through his conversation with Lily, we learn that he sees marching as an effective way of making his demand for freedom heard. He participates in every civil rights march, and thinks that if the protestors act respectably and give the authority “no cheek”, the people in power will give them “no trouble” and will listen to their grievances. Sadly, Friel shows in the play that this is an incredibly naïve perception. The authority does not care about people’s welfare. They don’t play by the “rules”, and they have no hesitation in suppressing people’s right to march, and killing whoever threatens their power and control.

Unlike Michael, Skinner possesses an incredible insight into how the authority treats the poor and the powerless. He knows that “the poor will always be overcharged”, and he sees how pointless the civil rights marches can be. What Skinner wants is fair treatment and equality. However, he knows that real freedom will remain a dream as long as the authority continues to oppress. So instead of looking for ways to change the situation, Skinner seeks to withdraw and escape. He travels to different places like England and Scotland in an attempt to forget the conflict and the oppression in his homeland. In addition, Skinner uses flippancy and humour as a way of taking his mind away from the harsh reality of his existence. We can see that during his conversation with Lily and Michael, Skinner is never able to settle on one topic. One moment he is explaining to Lily why she is marching, then seconds later, he started talking about running for an election to become the next Mayor of Derry. Perhaps the only time when Skinner really reveals his true self is when he strikes his ceremonial sword into the portrait of Sir Joshua. This shows that deep down he really cares about freedom, social equality and feels angry about the government’s indifference to the plight of the poor. However, Skinner knows very well that it is only an empty “gesture”, and any attempt fighting with the authority face-to-face to gain freedom is just as futile as this gesture itself.

In many ways, Lily has the least freedom amongst the three main characters. Not only does she lack civil rights and social equality like Michael and Skinner, Lily is also trapped by her daily domestic struggles. She lives in a place that “isn’t fit for animals”. She works long hours as a cleaner with little pay to support eleven children and an abusive husband who calls her “a bone stupid bitch”. Lily is denied freedom in her role as a traditional Irish Catholic wife, and she marches in the hope that her life and her children’s life can be a little bit better. In some sense, Lily has achieved a momentary liberation in the Guildhall, as she enjoys the plush surroundings and drinks her “port wine”. Yet her freedom is short-lived, and comes with a fatal price. As Lily so simply puts it “it’s a very unfair world”; a world where any hopes of freedom for people like Lily is ruthlessly destroyed.

It is evident through the play that while they have been momentarily detached from their daily struggles during their stay in the Guildhall, neither Michael, Skinner nor Lily have ultimately succeeded in achieving true freedom that they wanted. It seems Brian Friel is trying to make the point to the audience that indeed freedom is something very difficult to achieve in certain political and social circumstances for people at the fringe of society.
