A person who has decided to become a citizen of another country must have had a good reason to do so whether it was for experience, opportunity, or another reason. Besides, if the Japanese Americans had turned their back on the United States and gone to Japan’s side to fight for them, that would have just worsened their status in the U.S. Their loyalty to the States were being questioned and doubted so much, going on Japan’s side would just agree with all the accusations rather than contradict them. Page 1). Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, many residents feared that there would be more Japanese attacks on their cities, homes, and businesses (Noe, Michael. Page 1), thus leading to those of Japanese ancestry to be moved to internment camps. On February 1, 14, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 066, which ordered over 10,000 people with Japanese ancestry, including more than two-thirds of whom were American citizens, to be moved to internment camps throughout the country (Noe, Michael. Page 1). This act by the American government shows that they did not trust the Japanese. They didn’t even want the Japanese near them and wanted them to be placed in isolated places, thinking it would keep any “backstabbing” from happening. These Japanese Americans were despised so much that Americans often destroyed their property. They questioned their loyalty so much that they would not even let Japanese American citizens fight for their country. This was important because the addition of the Japanese Americans may or may not have made a difference in the war. Not having the good amount of these men could hurt the advantage you could have if they were included. On the other hand, the addition of the Japanese Americans could have given U.S. the disadvantage and Japan the advantage. If they were included in the drafting, these American citizens could have very well turned their backs on their America and their citizenship and helped out their “homeland.” Maybe the United States had a reasonable reason to exclude them from fighting in the war for the moment. However, despite all of the accusations, doubt, and assumptions, a team known as the 44nd Regimental Combat Team that consisted of all Japanese Americans was created. Even with all the racism they faced, they still decided to fight for our country, the United States. With their helping hand in World War II, they earned the respect of America again, not only for themselves, but also for Japan.
The 44nd combat team made the right choice to fight for America because Japan did a bad deed by bombing Pearl Harbor, they are American citizens, and because it was their chance to gain back the lost respect for Japan. Japan did a bad thing by bombing Pearl Harbor because it was done out of greed. All Japan wanted was more resources for themselves and attempted to get it by killing many innocent people and attacking a country that didn’t even want to get involved in the first place. The 44nd Regimental Combat Team did the right thing because they fought for the country they are citizens of rather than the one they left. By fighting for the United States, the 44nd Combat Team earned back, most, if not all, respect the Japanese had lost after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was their one chance to prove their loyalty to the U.S. and they reacted by taking it. If they hadn’t fought of the United States and had backed-up Japan instead, who knows where the two countries would stand right now. One would definitely have suffered greatly and may have even fallen to the hands of the other. Or even worse, a great battle could have ensued between the two countries, leading to the destruction, or near destruction of several areas of the world. This would only be known if the 44nd hadn’t fought for their citizen country and had instead fought for their homeland.
