Sophocles was the first to write greek tragedies in a non-trilogic
form. His greatest work was the play of Oedipus the King, known in Latin as
Oedipus the Rex. It was written for an annual festival where playwrights
competed for prizes. This was written in an era noted as the Golden Age for

philosophy. During this period many were questioning Greeks of their
mythology. Socrates a popular philosopher during this time was actually
prosecuted for expressing doubts on gods. This play was written to question
whether the Greeks believed in their own mythology. One of the major
themes of this play was fate and destiny. Greeks had strong beliefs in destiny
and what the gods had predetermined for them during this time.
In this play Oedipus is told through prophecy that he will murder his
father and marry his mother. He leaves town trying to flee his predestined
fate. On his way he is insulted by an old man whom he kills. He then
answers a riddle which no one else could answer and they crown him the
king of Thebes. He then marries the queen. In all irony the man he killed on
the road ends up being his father and the queen he married ended up being
his mother. So while trying to escape his fate he runs into it.
This leads us to a question between fate and free will. If fate was such
a key part of life to the Greeks, how much free will or own choice did they
have? How much control does Oedipus have over his own actions? I
believe Oedipus’ real mistake in this play was trying to go against the gods
and his own fate. It was Oedipus’ own choice and free will to leave who he
thought were his parents and move to Thebes. It was his fate that Thebes
was his original birthplace. It was his choice to kill the old man who
insulted him along the way. It was his fate that it ended up being his father.
Jocasta killing her self was a good example of free will because there was no
prophecies of Jocasta committing suicide. You can feel a strong sense of
the belief in destiny in this play by nowhere stating that this was Oedipus’
fault at all. This all happened to him as a result of the gods predetermined
fate for him. I believe that fate is determined and freewill determines how
one goes about getting there. Fate does exist but free will prevails. The
characters in this play took every precaution to avoid their predetermined
destiny, but in the end they were all casualties of fate.
