Throughout the novels we have read this year the characters develop a variety of personalities, which mainly symbolize mankind as a whole. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph was the symbol of understanding, but imperfect, mankind. He tried to establish an orderly society based on rules and authority from knowledge of the civilization he once knew. “The children gave him the same simple obedience that they had given to the men with megaphones.” (p.18) However, he struggled against the forces of evil (The Lord of the Flies) throughout the book. Additionally, the boys learned how to expand their customs in order to survive in an environment entirely different from what they were used to. All the boys, including the five year olds, needed to learn how to hunt, explore the island, and build fires to abide to their new lifestyle. This came as a shock and sort of unreal reality to the youngest boys since they’re still too young to understand.
“He can’t hurt you but if you stand out of the way he’d hurt the next thing. And that’s me.” (p 84) This quote is part of a discussion Ralph and Piggy were having about Jack. They both feel some what threatened by him and feel as though his intentions towards Ralph and Piggy are only cynical and never optimistic. Jack symbolized savagery and emotion. He as a dictator, guided by the purpose of evil, was fixated on hunting. When he did not get his way with being leader, he begins his own group on the other side of the island, leaving Piggy and Ralph (his enemies) alone. He provoked the boys to hunt, urges them to participate in wild dances, organizes a plan to invade Ralph’s camp and led them to savagery. The boys all seemed to have a follower. Ralph depended on Piggy who’s rational and had a good understand on life which Ralph admires. Piggy is a very intellectual, intelligent boy and without the use of his glasses, the boys would not have been able to start a fire which was their hope for survival and rescue. Jack saw Roger as a follower, along with most of the “littluns” since they would rather have fun hunting then actually working like they did under Ralph’s authority. At the beginning, Roger was under control of refined ruling, but later turned completely savage and ignores all the rules of civilized behavior. He was an aggressive boy and has the power to destroy and ends up killing Piggy. Simon was the quiet and shy one of the group. Eventually, he isolated himself from the rest of the group due to his diverse behavior. He usually would ends up alone and one time ended up going into the forest single-handedly. Because he became more of a loner, he discovered that the beast was the “Lord of the Flies,” the evil in all of them. Simon represented truth, and honorability, unlike the other boys. When he tried to tell the savages the truth about the beast, they rejected what he said and literally tear him apart. That showed how the new environment the boys lived in turned them into entirely dissimilar people from what they had been when they first crashed on the island.

In Choice of Weapons by Gordon Parks, the changes the character experiences in the book are relatively different then those in Lord of the Flies. The changes are not as drastic but are also due to the change in the surroundings the character inhabits. In Choice of Weapons, the main character Gordon, changes when he struggled to live on his own for the first time and was faced with the predicament of the “real world”. The book took place during the 10s, a time of prosperity and segregation. When Gordon was faced with the difficulties and disadvantages of a young black man during that time, he realized the evil within men. Gordon encountered different troubles everyday because of his color and was disturbed to see what went on outside the boarders of which he was brought up. “As a child I was poor, but so beautifully raised with the love of my mother and father, as well as that of fourteen brothers and sisters. What they gave is now what I attempt to give.” Gordon was faced with discrimination while finding a place to work, and a place to live. “He looked at me as thought I were about to draw a gun on him” ”I’m not supposed to take colored in here. I’m sorry. It’s the boss’s rule, not mine. You understand, don’t you?”(p.65) Gordon had people tell him this every time he tried to find a place to sleep, a place to eat, and work. Finally he was given a job to clean up rooms at the Hotel Southland. For each night, a room coasted him fifty cents and left him hardly enough money for food, but he took whatever he could get. Being a young man one his own, supporting himself, was not easy for Gordon. His behavior changed and he began fighting back using his fists, instead of his usually behavior, fighting with words. One night while working at Hotel Southland, Gardons boss did not have his pay check for him and Gordon went to the extreme measures and threatened him with a gun. At that point, Gordon could distinguish the difference in his behavior since he had left home. Continuing on through the book, he encountered other situations which he used his “choice of weapons”, his fists, to fight back whenever he felt endangered.
Gorden traveled around the country to cities where he did not feel accepted and becomes aware of people’s natural demeanor of discrimination. He was in search of what he wanted to do with his life, and finds his passion in photography. He decided that he wanted to continue a career in photography and went to ghettos where he photographed the poverty and the biasness of what laid around him. He enjoyed this because it permitted him to change his habits and his “choice of weapons”. “Poverty and bigotry would still be around, but at last I could fight them on even terms. The significant thing was a choice of weapons with which to fight them most effectively.” (p.74)
Another book that compared aspects of the dissolution of socialized behavior is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. However, it was not as radical as in the other novels. In the beginning of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout and Jem Finch were rather innocent and naïve to the unfairness in Maycomb County. Around the town and in school, Scout and Jem were tortured by the fact their father was defending a “nigger”. Due to the fact that Scout and Jem were still young at the time, they did not fully understand why black people were not yet accepted. Maycomb did not thus far accept the fact that slavery had been abolished and black people were now apart of their community. By doing that, Harper Lee portrays the traditional southerners approach to the decline of slavery. All of this came into effect and changed the knowledge Scout and Jem had about the world. As the trial approaches and starts to unravel, more essentials are shown that Tom was innocent. However, the towns’ attitude continued to depict racism regarding the crime a black man supposable committed. Not only were Scout and Jem exposed to the injustice toward black people, but also to themselves. “You ain’t got no business bringin’ white chullun here they got their church, we got our’n. It is our church, ain’t it, Miss Cal?”(p.11) Since the trial had started, and especially with the conviction that Tom was guilty, Scout and Jem notice mans crudity as regards to the color of ones skin and the disadvantages they endure. All of that changed the way they perceived life and made the peaceful world they once new into a world filled of hatred and unfairness.
All of these books continued to show how the changes in ones lifestyle and surroundings can lead to a kind of socialized breakdown. Some transform into positive behaviors and others transform into negative. In Lord of the Flies the dissolution of socialized behavior was more obvious but still compared to that in A Choice of Weapons and To kill a Mockingbird. In all of the books the characters learn more about the nature of mankind and the evil that presents itself. These teachings and experiences change the way they conduct themselves and depict what type of person they will develop into.
