WW1 POETRY
The two poems that I intend to compare and contrast are “The Hero” by Siegfried Sassoon and “Dulce Et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen. Both poems talk of men who died. The poems are both seen (via the author) through the eyes of serving soldiers. Both poets seem keen to let the reader know what really happens in a war environment.
Although both poets have this common purpose, Sassoon demonstrates the lies and deceit that afflicted the average family. Families were told what the government and military wanted them to hear “gallant lies”. It would have affected morale at home if soldiers were portrayed as cowards, so ironically all families always had “The Hero” in their family.
Specifically, Sassoon’s hero is a young man who has attempted to get himself sent home and died in the process. A fellow officer is sent with the “death” telegram and to personally notify her. He tells the mother that her son died a hero, while he lets the reader know the real tale he, “told the poor old dear some gallant lies”. This made the mother’s “weak eyes” shine in a kind of “gentle triumph”. Personally, I feel it is the wrong way and that people should have known the truth but, I concede, that the old lady would have been devastated with this news.

Sassoon uses direct speech in the first verse to show us just how proud the mother is. In the second verse he has the officer thinking to just how Jack had died and it is more sinister because it is done after he has left the mother. I believe Sassoon wants us to be left wondering how harsh, selfish and uncaring people could be during the War leaving us to ponder that “no-one seemed to care except that lonely old woman with white hair”.
“Dulce et decorum est” uses the stark reality of war to get its message across. Not deceit and lies except the one big “lie” we are left with at the end. Owen clearly gives us an incite into how bad ‘real’ war is. We are given the impression of the tired men “bent double” and looking like “hags”. They “marched asleep” until the gas attack made them move in an “ecstasy of fumbling”. However, one man was too slow and Owen wastes no time in showing us the effects of chlorine gas, with the man “choking” and “drowning”.
The dying man is thrown into a wagon without much feeling and as the truck moves “every jolt” makes the “blood come gargling from froth-corrupted lungs”. The other soldiers are forced to watch an image that the poet puts across to his readers. It is the image of a man whose “white eyes are writhing in his face. His hanging face”. Owen, then, does not see how dying for your country can be honourable in these circumstances and is quick to tell his readers that this is “the old lie”.
Although both poets tell us a story of the First World War, I think that Owen is more dramatic and gets his point across forcefully. Sometimes it is quite sickening as the War really was. Sassoon is a little more subtle but equally powerful in his condemnation of the system that sent young men to their deaths.
