I agree that in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Ivan Denisovich does command pity but also respect. He commands pity because of the hardships that have been done to him but also respect because of the way he handles the hardships.
There are many instances where his actions and history demand our pity or respect but not both. For instance we are told on the first page that he was always up at dawn because ‘that way he had an hour and a half all to himself before work parade time for a man who knew his way around to ear a bit on the side.’ This demands respect because of his initiative to make things out of almost nothing e.g. the slippers he makes out of old bed linen.
Ivan wants to survive and live out his sentence. The narrator then comes back with

Ivan has been in the hard labour camps for eight years and still remains unbroken, the strongest evidence being just before Buynovsky’s protest when the kolkhoz narrator says,
‘Shukhov was wearing only camp issue anyway go ahead he told them silently, have a feel, nothing here, only a bare chest with a soul inside it.’
Buynovsky on the hand will be seriously ill from his spell in the hole and more than likely a broken spirit. To remain unbroken in this you need one of two things;

Fetyukov I feel, has not been broken it is just that as Ivan believes coming from a city he is not used to heavy manual labour and so has not be able to adapt and cope with this hard life, he has no food parcels like Ivan but Ivan refuses to drop to this level because his own moral standards are too high. This requires respect but not pity as it could be so easy to scavenge people’s scraps of food.
When Ivan is washing the floor in the guard house we learn that Ivan has not seen his wife for eight years. This is something that you pity about Ivan.
