In the story, The Loons by Margaret Laurence, there is a conflict between Whites and Indians or M tis and at the same time, there is a lesson. The main character, Vanessa is a white young girl who grows up in the family with the high social hierarchy in the town of Manawaka. Due to Vanessas lack of knowledge, Vanessa is greatly affected by her background and environment when she tries to understand her Indian classmate, Piquette, who lives under a welfare with the family with the low social hierarchy. At the end of the story, however, when Vanessa gets older and comes back to the town of Manawaka after her collage, she understands Piquette and her strange acts better.
Vanessas background and environment are the main things that make her hard to understand Piquette. The huge gap between Vanessas social hierarchy and Piquettes disturbs Vanessa to try even get closer to Piquette. Vanessa says, The Tonnerres were French halfbreeds, and among themselves they spoke a patois that was neither Cree nor French. They were, as my Grandmother MacLeod would have put it, neither flesh, fowl, nor good salt herring(). Furthermore, her grandmother MacLeod influences Vanessa greatly by showing the ignorance and misunderstanding about the Natives. Vanessas father, Ewen, who is a doctor of Manawaka and takes care of Piquettes bone, is the only one in the family who really tries to help Piquette by taking her to his familys vacation to the cabin by the Diamond Lake.
