Anthem, a novel by Ayn Rand, is a story about how the lives of humans live in a future society. In this world, technology has all been forgotten, amity and love are considered egotistic and corrupt, and intellectual question of any kind is considered fatally sin. In this society, there is no such word as “I” or any other individualistic characters. Everyone that directs to him or herself says “we” and if they are referring to another one, they say “they” instead of him or her, which is a single person. The people in this society live under a dictatorship and breed, live, and work according to its government’s orders. These inhabitants of this social order live exactly by the world government’s choice, which urges brotherhood and the common good. The narrator of this novel, Equality 7-51 cannot gain contentment, and even though he inquiring and insightful, he is appointed the job of sweeping the streets. One day he finds a deserted underground place left by the unmentionable times. He experiments there, and discovers electricity. In the meantime, he has fallen in love with a young woman named Liberty-5-000 whom he calls the Golden One. One day, he returns late from his underground place and refuses to tell his superiors where he has been. He escapes after being imprisoned and whipped and takes his electric light to the World Council of Scholars, being positive that the importance and value of his invention will make up for his misbehavior. However, instead they become enraged at him for even daring to construct something by himself, rather than with others, because this society is a life all based as a whole. The council of course decides to destroy the electric light. Fortunately, Equality 7-51 escapes and takes his invention with him to run away into the wilderness, where the land is unexplored and uncharted. He is surprised to see that his beloved, Liberty 5-000, has followed him for a while and has joined him on his trail. They discover a deserted house from the Unmentionable Times, a place full with books and other treasures, such as various colored clothes, mirrors, globes, and several other things that were not known to them. While reading the books, the narrator discovers the word I for the first time, and takes in a philosophy of heroic individualism. Equality 7-51 names himself Prometheus and the Golden One is named Gaea. He carves the word Ego over his doorway, pledges to gather like-minded souls, and overthrow the totalitarianism that governs the world. Prometheus has many plans for the improved future to come.
After completing this novel, I automatically thought of what would happen after the discovery of the house and new and regained knowledge. I implied that finding this new life satisfies Prometheus and Gaea, unless of course another problems arise, such as the lack of rain or water, or food. There are numerous issues that are not known by them, and it will take a long while to gather and understand this knowledge that was lost. It is stated in the last few pages of this book the actions Equality 7-51, or Prometheus, will take in the upcoming times. If a sequel to this novel of this story is made and when the story of his book is continued, I believe that Prometheus will learn several secrets from the books in his home. He will “rebuild the achievements of the past, and open the way to carry them further”. Prometheus states that only these accomplishments that are open to him are closed for his brothers, but I believe that some of his brothers might also end up in the wilderness. This is because if one person has done something, it will likely be repeated. I also predict that Prometheus and Gaea will return to the society where their friends and brothers or sisters live, tell them the truth, and persuade them to follow them. The truth of the world can never be hidden from anyone and people in the society dominated by the world government will eventually come to the truth. However, there are also others who are stubborn and will not accept this idea of individualism and the advanced technology discovered. This will most likely cause problems if this novel is continued. As said in the concluding parts of his novel, Gaea is pregnant. This child will raised up to learn the truth of human living and will of course and most importantly be taught to say “I” and act as an individual. Other children will also be produced by each generation, and the world may regain its past one day and maybe also improve on it.
