“Last Cover” by Paul Annixter is an interesting story that anyone who has ever owned a pet could relate to. Every pet owner has the warm memories of buying, adopting or weaning their new companion, but unless they are just a small child, they all know that one day their pet will no longer be with them. Then the time comes where they have to give their pet away, or let it free into the wilderness. They may also have to go through with the pain when their pet dies or runs away. This story deals with the memories and emotions of having, and losing a pet into the hands of fate.
I was intrigued by the way the main character and his father dealt with their emotions. They both hid their emotions as best as they could, even though they peaked out occasionally. The main character said “at fourteen boys don’t cry”. Though most modern day men are beginning to come out and abandon their forefathers “alpha male” ways, there are still boys out their who feel they are not “allowed” to show their emotions. The alpha males obviously got their behavior from their biggest influences their fathers, brothers, and their other male companions. In this story, the main character feels that his younger brother, Colin, should be allowed to cry because he is ‘special’. Colin was a very talented and special boy indeed. He was different from his brother and his father. He went his own way. His true passion was not ‘masculine’ as (I’m sure) his father would have hoped. Colin loved art. At the beginning of the story his father gave the impression that he strongly disapproved of Colin’s passion, but as the story went on, I realized just how fond he actually was fond of his sons art. Colin convinced his Dad by simply showing him a piece of his artwork, which obviously moved his father in ways you can’t use words to explain. I think the father always loved Colin’s artwork, it just took a picture his son made that spoke to him in a million words without anyone ever opening their mouths.
The suspense in “Last Cover” was almost unbearable. I was petrified as the farmers went out on a hunt, looking specifically for Bandit, the families fox. The family had spent so much time caring for Bandit, and now that he was on his own, they could no longer be there for him. The family felt helpless. I was on my toes as the story continued, waiting for something wrong to happen, and hoping for a happy ending.
This story had the rising action that reminds you of times when your family went through an action packed experience. This is a story with a ‘real’ feeling to it.
