Good evening ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to the JWCS study day. In English we have been studying History and Memory. This speech will be based around the topic, “History, without memory is merely a collection of facts, and consequently without real meaning in our world.”

In our main text that we have been studying, “The Fiftieth Gate”, the relationship between history and memory comes through clearly.

“The town hall. The church. Here. Right her, my god. My god, not a thing”.p.45

“See, I remember. We were here. Carla lived here, and so we lived, one, two, three, here.”p.45Custom writing offers papers on ADVANCED ENGLISH-ASSESSMENT TASKMODULE-CHISTORY AND MEMORY

These quotes are reflections of Baker’s mother’s memories. Physically being in the place where events have taken place brings memories back for her. She has a flood of memories as she visits her home town. Only things have changed, which means as she compares contrasts, more memories flow.

The quote, “Memory records but also composes history”, gives good contrast between the relationship history and memory hold. Most history is some form of memory but there is no absolute history, it is written from personal experiences or memories and therefore creates some bias. All memories are different and unique for each individual. Memories recall and retell history, history inturn is the general agreement of memories.

History has been formed from what people have seen or heard and then retold or passed on to younger generations. It’s their composition of the events and happenings. Mark Baker’s history comes from his parent’s memories. Some memories we can choose to black out and try to forget, it’s how humans cope with it. It is understandable for some one who has survived through such atrocities that the holocaust has brought about to want to forget about and block out bad memories.

At a recent visit to the Jewish museum we were shown around by a holocaust survivor named Olga. On display at the museum was a blanket made from human and animal hair shaved of the heads and bodies of concentration camp prisoners. To me this blanket is merely just a piece of history , a historical artefact on display in a museum on display. But to Olga there is a story behind it, this blanket brings back many memories of when she was found with her when she was rescued by British Armed Forces. She was found sick and half frozen in the camp with the blanket and kept it until she was repatriated to Czeckyslovakia.

A memory she shared with us was when she had been taken to the hospital and told she was going to die by a priest and about to be given the last rights. “I’m one of the only survivors, I’m not going to die. And also I’m Jewish, you can’t give me the last rights”. This memory would have been made much stronger by the blanket, which acted as a catalyst in stirring her memories.

The way history is represented can also act as a catalyst, triggering lot’s of memories.

An article written by Caroline Overington in the Sydney Morning Herald talks about a recent art display in New York’s Jewish Museum. Young Jewish artists have depicted their interpretations of the holocaust and created great uproar in the older Jewish community who are trying to get the exhibition cancelled. Some exhibitions include, a concentration camp made out of lego and giftgas giftset or perfume with designer labels such as Chanel and Hermes. These interpretations would suggest to a Jewish holocaust survivor that it was a good thing, and that no harm was done in it.

The artists have represented the holocaust as James Young would say, “In a different way, and the result is unnerving and taboo breaking”.

Because the younger generation of Jews did not experience the anarchy of the holocaust, it does not have as much of an impact on them. The elders feel as if they are being made a mockery of and see the representations as offensive.

There is a difference in perspectives of the older generation who have memories of experiences of the holocaust and the younger generation who rely on the history.

As Mark Baker said in “The Fiftieth Gate”, “All memories are formed in black and white images like this one, channelled through snapshot portraits which present the past as a series of frozen moments. I collect my memories in colour-coded albums.”

He wasn’t there at that time in history but from the photo’s he can make up his own memories. Photo’s are a representation and can prompt memory, we may forget detail and specifics but photo’s hold the exact memory frozen in time.

The way that the SS officers were represented in the war was of intelligence and that they were the elite group. In a photo at the Jewish Museum an SS officer is cutting off a Jewish mans beard. For a Jew this was seen as extremely humiliating, almost torture. The SS officer’s face is bearing a grin and shows a sense of delight in doing this.

The way history is represented can often change the way it’s remembered. Because history is the general agreement of peoples memories, it is very easy to have your memories changed to suit everyone else’s. The whole idea of the holocaust as stated by David Irving, a British writer, is “a legend”. He refers to the holocaust as being made up for Jews to gain sympathy and attention. That the holocaust was just one person’s idea which changed everyone else’s memories to suit theirs. This is very hard to comprehend. There would be far too many peoples memories to change for this theory to be true.

For something to have “real meaning in our world”, is a personal thing. Only individuals can explain for themselves what has “real meaning” in our somewhat meaningless lives. This is usually demonstrated through their values, morals and emotions. The oxford dictionary’s meaning of “real” is something actually existing or occurring in fact, genuine, rightly so called, not artificial. And “meaning” is to be of some importance or significance. So “real meaning” would be something that has genuine significance.

History and memory are a package, history is made from memories and memories are made from history. To have history without memory is not even a collection of facts, for memory is the source from which history is derived. History is nothing without memory and has no genuine significance in our world. You can’t have one without the other, the relationship between them is too strong. This comes through strongly in “The Fiftieth Gate”, “He remembers, therefore I am”, p.18. Mark Baker’s frightened that his father may lose his memory. For if he does Mark will have no history.
