In this essay I will address some of the similarities and differences in the pattern of development between “Saboteur” and “The Storm.” First, I will start with character focusing most on the chosen character’s motivation. Second, I will contrast the setting of each story. Third, I will address the tone in which I think the story is written. Finally, I will compare the style of each story.

The character in “Saboteur” that I want to look at is Mr. Chiu. His motivation slowly builds throughout the story. Mr. Chiu’s character developed quickly into his role of being charged as a saboteur. It is clear that Mr. Chiu’s motivation was to seek revenge against the police department which in turn became revenge against the city, Muji. Mr. Chiu was disgruntled for being arrested and having to admit to a crime he feels he did not commit. His anger was not just toward the situation, but also toward his wife. This was evident in the comment he made when the former student, a new lawyer, arrived to aid in his release. When he looked out his small window, he found his lawyer being held captive in the yard under the hot sun because of his disrespectfulness toward the chief of police.

When Mr. Chiu was released the first thing he did was to seek his revenge in an inconspicuous manner. He went to several different eateries before returning home exposing hundreds to his outbreak of hepatitis.

“The Storm’s” character Calixta developed slower than Mr. Chiu. Calixta was calm in her own world sewing until she realized the sky was getting dark from the approaching storm. It was then that she started to worry about her husband and young son being out in the storm. When her old lover Alcee’ rides up on his horse just in time to weather out the storm, Calixta wards off his romantic advances. Shortly, thereafter, she gives into the lust as the trees give into the wind gusts outside. She let herself get wrapped up in the moment, which in the end turned out to help her, her husband, and Alcee’.Pay for essay on Pattern of Development between “Saboteur” and “The Storm”

The setting developed differently for each story. Jin explains in detail the surroundings of Mr. Chiu. However, in “The Storm”, some surroundings are described while others are not and you are left to imagine for yourself the rest of the surroundings.

The setting for “Saboteur” was that of a small rail town called Muji. The majority of this story takes place in a small prison cell where “the single window in the room was blocked by six steel bars; it faced a spacious yard, in which stood a few pines.” (par. 5). In his cell was a small bed with a straw mattress infested with fleas and a blanket full of holes. There were two occasions when Mr. Chiu was taken from his cell to the Interrogation Bureau, located on the second floor of the railroad prison building.

“The Storm” was located in a southern state, where many locals stop education after high school. It was a small, rural town where people rode horses or walked to get around. It was a hot and sultry day with a refreshing storm of rain and wind that swept through the town as a tidal wave of renewal and regeneration.

As I look at the tone for the two stories, it is evident how different they are. As “Saboteur” unfolds, it describes the pain, anger and anguish Mr. Chiu is going through trying to fight for his freedom while also trying to fight back an onset of Hepatitis. Mt. Chiu starts to realize there is no way for him to win against the police without admitting to the crime he is convinced he did not commit. Then he sees in the yard the lawyer his new bride sent to aid in his release. Mr. Chiu’s tone then shifts and is more relaxed as he tries to figure out how he is going to get his lawyer and himself released. Although he still appears relaxed after their release, he is full of anger and resentment as he visits numerous eating establishments and mutters “if only I could kill all the bastards.” (par. 105).

In “The Storm” it was easy to get involved in the beginning of the story, but it was a bit harder as the story progressed. The tone changed from Calixta being worried and concerned about her family, as she stood at the window watching the storm pound outside. She was hoping that they had stayed at the store. Then it switched to her being wrapped up in a moment of passion as her former lover embraces her and fills her with passion like they had before. When her family returned after the storm passed, they expected her to come unglued about the state of their clothes. She was actually loving and compassionate that they were alright and made it home safely.

The style between these stories had some similarities, but many differences. “The Storm” had differences between the conversation and the descriptive, narrative words and sentence structure that were used. The conversations were in slang and southern twang, which seemed to be in line with a relaxed, at home type of conversation. The narratives were a higher level of sentence structure, and descriptions. It appeared to me that the narrator has a higher level of education than that of the characters.

The style of “Saboteur” is of high emotion, and it was written in a way that portrays a higher level of education and reasoning by the sentence structure and level of conversation with Mr. Chiu and the Interrogation Bureau. Although Mr. Chiu is angry, he still makes a strong, valid point in trying to explain and plead his innocence. “Saboteur” is written as a typical conversation you expect to take place between an educated man and a police commander.

After looking at character, setting, tone and style between these two stories, it is clear that they share some similarities but more differences.
