The ancient Egyptians wanted to live forever. They believed that the soul, or ba, could travel from the other world back to Egypt so that the soul could keep in contact with family and friends. The ba needed to be able to recognize the body in order to return to it at night. For this reason, the ancient Egyptians believed that the body needed to be preserved or mummified.
Mummification was a long, complex, and expensive process. Embalmers took 70 days to prepare a body. They used metal hooks to take out the brain. Then, embalmers made a slit on the left side of the corpse¡¯s body and took out the liver, lungs, stomach, and the intestines. Next, the organs were covered with natron and placed in containers called canopic jars. The heart was left in its place. Embalmers then stuffed natron packs inside the corpse¡¯s body and covered the outside of the body with natron. Last, the body was placed on a slanted, embalming bed. Fluids from the body dripped into a container as the body dried out.
After 40 days, the natron packs were removed. The dried, shrunken body was sponged clean and covered with special oils and ointments. Embalmers stuffed the head and body with new packing. The eye sockets were plugged with linen, and the nostrils were stuffed with beeswax. The corpse¡¯s arms were crossed, and the fingernails and toenails were covered with caps of gold. On the left side of the body, the slit was sewn. The mummy was adorned with jewels.
Finally, the body was wrapped with long, narrow strips of linen. Fingers, toes, arms, and legs were wrapped individually, and linen shrouds placed between layers. Every few layers were glued with resin. After 0 layers, the body took on its normal size.
