In Shakespeares play Macbeth, the three murders demonstrate the deterioration

he kills Duncan. In fear of being discovered, Macbeth hires three murderers to kill his loyal
friend Banquo. The murder of Macduff’s family shows the reader that Macbeth has no
sense of moral value by killing innocent people.
Preceding the first murder Macbeth experiences hallucinations due to his guilt.
Macbeth has thoughts about killing Duncan because he believes according to the witches
Prophecy he should be King. However, it is shown to the reader that Macbeth’s
conscience comes into play and it appears he doesn’t have the heart to perform such an
act. He begins questioning his ambition to obtain what he wants, until his wife intervenes.
She calls Macbeth a coward and tells him that killing Duncan is the right thing to do.
At this point in the play Macbeth has to be persuaded by his wife to kill Duncan. When
Lady Macbeth has persuaded her husband to never let Duncan see daylight again, he
still has guilt of doing the sinful deed. The guilt is shown through his hallucinations;
“Is this a dagger which I see before me,
The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch
thee
I have thee not, and yet I see thee still”.
(II,i, -5)
Before Macbeth goes into Duncan’s room to kill him, Macbeth sees a dagger dripping
with blood but it is only his imagination. This shows Macbeth still has morals and
a conscience and knows killing Duncan is wrong. He is nervous of what consequences are
to follow the crime he will commit. With this murder Macbeth’s character shows that he
has fear in what will happen if he kills Duncan.
In the next occurrence of Macbeth’s murders, in fear of being caught Macbeth
hires three murderers to kill Banquo. In order to keep Macbeth innocent of murdering
Duncan he believes he must kill his loyal friend Banquo, who commented on how
Macbeth has everything the three witches promised. However, Banquo thinks Macbeth
gained it through evil. Macbeth is in fear of Banquo’s wisdom and will try to kill him and
his son as the witches said Banquo’s children will be Kings. Unlike the murder of Duncan
Macbeth is not forced or told by anyone to kill Banquo. Macbeth has come to the
conclusion of Banquo and his son Fleance deaths, totally on his own. The murderers kill
Banquo but Fleance has escaped. Macbeth is in fear of Fleance however, is grateful
Banquo is dead. At the banquet Macbeth’s fear and guilt come into play when he sees
Banquo’s ghost;
“Avaunt! And quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee!
Thy bones are marrowless, thy blood is cold;
Thou hast no speculation in those eyes
Which thou dost glare with.”
(III, iv, -6)
Macbeth’s guilt of killing Banquo causes him to see Banquo’s ghost. Macbeth’s moral
value and respect for mankind is continuing to disappear.
Macbeth’s murder of Macduff’s family shows the reader that Macbeth has become
ruthless and performs meaningless killings. This murder shows the total deterioration of
Macbeth’s moral character. He has no reason to kills Macduff’s family yet he
chooses to do so anyway. In Macbeth’s previous murders, Macbeth always had fear of
being caught. However, there is no fear in Macbeth because he knows that no one born of
a woman can harm him. Macbeth believes he now is in the clear to do whatever he wants,
to whoever he wants. He has no emotion or care for human life and sends murderers
to carry out the murder of Macduff’s family;
“The castle of Macduff I will surprise;
Seize upon Fife; give to the edge of the sword
His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls.”
(IV, I, 150-15)
Macbeth states here that the murderers will go to Macduff’s castle and kill not only
Macduff’s family but anyone who stands in their way. Macbeth is not scared of the
consequences for his actions because he believes he has nothing to fear at all. He has no
regard to human life.
In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the three murders show how Macbeth’s moral
character deteriorates. At the beginning of the play Macbeth has a hard time accepting
the fact that he should kill Duncan. After all Duncan has already named Macbeth the
Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth feels that it is wrong and has guilt about killing the man
who has treated him like family. He has fear of being caught and is careful of what he
says. Lady Macbeth and him also plan the murder of Duncan. Macbeth fears that he will
get what is coming to him and be murdered in his sleep just like Duncan. In the next
murder that takes places Macbeth feels guilt for killing Banquo however, no one had
to persuade him to do the deed. At this point of the play you can begin to see Macbeth’s
character build courage and start to believe he will never be caught. In the next murder
Macbeth doesn’t think twice about killing Macduff’s family. Macbeth believes he is
immortal now that he knows no man born of woman can harm him. Macbeth has no fear
of being caught and could care less of what people think of him. His morals and
values have sank to an ultimate low and there is no respect shown towards him.
Macbeth let power and greed overtake his life and during the last murder he had no
fear of what consequences may follow. He went from being a guilt ridden man in the
beginning of the play to a guilt free man at the end.
