If civilization is the opposite of savagery, then is it still possible to migrate from one to the other in a matter of months? As for the way deterioration works, one who is stripped of all that makes them who they are will become the opposite of what he/she used to be. Even with many other things on this Earth of which an example would be that a ripe apple deteriorates over time until it is no longer edible whereas it was and edible fruit at one time prior to the rotting. Likewise, people have that rise and fall. In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies, when the boys first arrive on the island they automatically have the desire for some kind of law and order; a set of rules to keep everything together due to the fact that adults have absolutely no presence on the island whatsoever. The boys, from the day they crash on the island slowly begin to deteriorate; to breakdown and crumble all sense civilization, law, and order, resulting in the boys’ shift from civilized behavior to savagery.

Initially in the novel, signs of civilization are quite clear, and the rules are held with respect for the first few chapters showing phase one in the shift from civilization to savagery. The boys all have the initial state of mind of the desire to establish a sense of civilization on the island. Piggy is one who can very well represent Law and Order because of his constant reverting to those restrictions he once had and now has kept in his mind. Piggy says, “‘I can’t swim. I wasn’t allowed. My asthma-----,’” (1), which clearly shows that he is still very well attached to the civilized world of rules and perhaps too attached considering no one is stopping him from taking the swim. This gives him by first impression his personality of sticking to all rules. As he tries so very hard so keep everyone attached to the rules in which he fails. Piggy whines, “‘ I got the conch,’ said Piggy, in a hurt voice.’‘I got a right to speak.’ ” Piggy whines whenever he feels that Law and Order is threatened and is very upset because he is powerless against the boys of whom he is disliked and especially Jack. He is the symbol for Law and Order along with the conch which dies alongside him later in the novel. The law and order will not remain unfortunately as the story continues.

The boys want to belong to a group, with someone in charge to lead them, and make them feel safe and with that they choose to keep to civilization. After being chosen in a democratic election, Ralph becomes this leader, showing clear signs of civilization among the boys. “‘Vote for Chief!’” (), is yelled by one boy as the vote is to begin. The boys have the desire to keep everything in an orderly manner as they show they want guidance and would rather not be on their own to fend for themselves. Ralph’s society becomes a symbol of the democratic society, where everyone has their rights and an equal say. When Ralph says ‘“We’ll have rules!’ He cried excitedly. ‘Lots of rules!”’ (), he reveals that he feels the need to implement the rules and that Law and Order is one of the top priorities on the island. The conch is a very important and significant symbol for authority and civilization; anyone who holds it has the right to be heard. In Ralph’s society everyone works for the benefit of the whole group. Building shelters, looking for food and keeping the fire alive are the three most important issues. As the book goes on, rebellion sets in as slowly the rules are not taken seriously anymore

After a period of time this society starts to break up and Law and Order slowly deteriorate marking the second phase in the shift from civilization to savagery. With the fear of the ‘beastie’, the littluns have become terrified. This ‘beast from the air’ strikes fear into the hearts of the littluns but lust into Jack and his hunters. They desire to find the beast and destroy it and kill it. The boys begin to turn their hunts into sacrificial ritualistic things and ultimately begin to worship the satanistic symbol of the sows head on the spear. The character of Jack finally is revealed when he is caught up in a Hunt in which he says in a very sinister humorous tone, “use a littlun,” (115). Clearly filled with bloodlust from the hunt his savage personality reveals itself as he shows he wants to hunt and kill and will do anything to obtain the rush of the hunt. As Jack begins to distrust Ralph and wants to make his own tribe, their desire to please the beast is brought by the sacrifice of the sow’s head as an offering to the beast; the sow’s head personified as the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies even states what the true beast is when he says, “Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill!” (14). The Lord of the Flies identifies itself as the beast and acknowledges to Simon that it exists within all human beings. By this it is obvious that the meaning of his statement is that the true beast lies only within themselves and that Simon was correct when he hypothesized that it was only their imaginations that caused the beast to exist. His Christ-like character shows itself when he attempts to share the truth with the boys but is slain instead because of ignorance and denial just as Christ was crucified when he tried to spread truth and understanding. All of this being symbolic to man’s constant denial and ignorance of the truth and man’s completely ignorant habits. Jack contributes the most in the downfall of law and order by promoting actions of savagery and rebellion, being a savage himself, and giving himself a dictator sort of character so that he can rule without question.

As the law and order on the island deteriorates more and more edging for the final phase reaching total savagery, consistently killed off are those who represent truth, understanding, law, order, authority, and civilization. The death of Simon caused by the ignorance of the boys in the bloodlust of their tribal dance destroyed the truth and understanding brought by Simon. Taking another step away from civilization and towards savagery, afterwards, the death of Piggy caused by the homicidal act of Roger, represented the totally obliterated chance of civilization returning with the boys. However, there is a difference between these two deaths, as Simon’s death was accidental and Piggy’s death was deliberate. This shows the darkness inside man’s heart, which is released when mankind turns savage. Fear is what provokes savagery, as Roger lost control of his actions because of fear. With the destruction of the conch along with the death of Piggy, it also shows the destruction of authority and civilization. Along with that, Ralph weeps for the end of civilization, innocence, and his failure to maintain order on the island when it is said that, “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy.” (0). It can be made clear that there is no real hope there and that the rescue in the end is simply the return to civilization because it plunges Ralph into despair as he realizes that although he is saved from death on the island, he will never be the same. He has lost his innocence and learned about the evil that lurks within all human beings.

Jack and the hunters show that mankind are inheritantly evil; if left alone to take care of themselves, fear will turn them into the savage roots of their ancestors. This is shown near the end of the novel with the killing of Piggy and the hunting of Ralph. Though at first Jack felt guilty for killing Simon, because he was still civilized, however as time goes on it turns into a thirst for blood, to kill anything that stands in his way to become the leader of the island. Ralph represents fairness and morality while Jack represents evil and the decay of civilization. Piggy symbolizes the law and order of the world they left behind. He attempts to act accordingly to an absolute set of standards. Roger symbolizes man’s natural tendency to cause harm to others, as he evolves into a terrorist, a savage, eager to throw rocks, roll boulders, and throw spears at his fellow tribe members and act as a follower of Jack to do his dirty work for him. Fear and frustration provoke the darkness of man’s heart and without law and order man will turn savage and as shown by events through the novel this community of stranded boys deteriorates moving from civilization to absolute savagery.
