In Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, it is clear that Moira is freer than the protagonist Offred. This can be argued due to the simple fact that Moira never gives in to totalitarianism and ultimately represents resistance to Gilead. I don’t think that freedom in this context has so much to do with a physical freedom, but being able to survive such a drastic societal change has to do with mental freedom. Rather than passively accept her fate, Moira was able to achieve her own mental freedom by not conforming without a fight. First of all, Moira is a lesbian and rejects the idea of male/female sexual interactions, which is the main purpose of women in Gilead. Handmaid’s like Offred have a sole purpose of having sex with Commander’s just for procreation. Moira does not accept the idea of becoming a Handmaid. Although later she in fact becomes a prostitute at Jezebels, she did everything in her power to stand up against the dictatorial state of Gilead.
Secondly, Moira is the only character in the book that directly rejects the oppressive state by making two attempts to escape. Although she was severely punished after she was caught trying to escape from the Red Center, she did not give up. Moira was eventually able to escape by attacking one of the Aunts and putting on her uniform, which shows her resourcefulness and independence.
Ultimately, Moira was in fact freer than Offred simply because she did not allow the state of Gilead to define her identity.
