Ursula is in conflict with her parents when she tries to help Matt by testifying for him and saying that he was only kidding around. Ursula’s parents tell her to keep out of the problem and leave Matt alone. When Ursula disregards her parents’ advice and speaks up for Matt, she is thinking independently and becomes a dissenter. By doing this Ursula validates my outlook of this quote.
Stargirl is very similar to Ursula because they both are independent thinkers. They both do what they want instead of listening and following the rest of the crowd. In the book Stargirl, Stargirl dresses, acts, talks, and even thinks different from everyone else. Stargirl’s characterization in the story is what makes my opinion of this quote true. Stargirl becomes a dissenter when she continues to sing “happy birthday” to people her ukulele, and with her pet rat Cinnamon on her shoulder, after she is told several times not to do it by Leo, Hilary, and the rest of the school.
