I am at this stage in my life, a freshman in college. This means that I have successfully completed twelve years of schooling. When I sit and think about it, I realize that it is not so hard for me to come up with an incident in which I was a victim of banking education. Banking education is a theory of Paulo Freire who was one of the most influential educators of our world. His theory stated that education is suffering from narration sickness. As a matter of fact, I’m sure that there have been numerous incidences in my schooling that involved this theory because I know that I had many teachers that followed this principle. I don’t really know if I should call “banking education” a principle or just a way of life. I sure hope it isn’t a way of life, but in my experiences I really can’t come up with a reason why it isn’t.





I can remember in 11th grade not that many years ago that I had a very typical American History class. My role as the student in this class was to listen to the information about different historical events, “study” the information, and have an exam that supposedly tests my “knowledge” of the things that I have “learned”. I can tell you right now that I can not remember anything from that class. If I were to be given a simple question about something that I worked on in that class, I probably wouldn’t have the slightest idea of what answer to give. I guess I was like a container as. I stored information in my mind for a reasonable amount of time up until I didn’t need it any more. When I was done with the information more space would clear up in my so-called container for more information. Notice that I say information, not knowledge. I can’t recall any of that information that I studied because my teacher, I guess made me believe that I would only need it to pass a test and nothing more. There was no knowledge pasted in me from that class that I could adapt to my own life. Why is this? I accepted this role as a student to be a passive learner. There was no communication whatsoever between me and my teacher. I figured that my teacher knew all the information and that I was just supposed to hear it, memorize it, and pass a test.





The role of my teacher in this matter may be giving me such questions that I want answered. The teacher was the supplier or the depositor as Freire might say. Let’s say I was just receiving a welfare check that would last me for a week or so and than it would be gone. The information that I was told wouldn’t be a need for me to know any more. There was no relationship with the teacher. The teachers have a course description to follow. Tell the students this and make sure they can pass this. Am I really being educated or am I just like a cache from an internet service provider which stores information for a limited amount of time and recalls itself if needed in that period? How am I learning? In my opinion, I’m not learning. I’m told to know things for a state test per se so that I can do well and get my “education” facility more money. It’s like I am just a pawn.





I also think about things that are in my mind as knowledge. For instance how do I always know that +=4? Or do I just have this memorized. I’ve learned that it was very rare when I had a teacher I really communicated with. Freire stated that “student’s who accepted a passive role imposed on them, would simply adapt to the world as it is to the fragmented view of reality deposited in them”. Well I guess I agree to this. My educational experiences definitely were an example of Freire’s banking concept. It seems like the educational system has just been screwing me over the last twelve years. Am I to really believe this? Friere would definitely think that I am just another victim of the banking concept. However, I don’t agree with everything Freire says about the banking concept. Even though I am a very passive learner I still believe that my creativity has been showing itself through the years. For instance, in high school I did many projects and writings that really helped my creativity show. Freire also states that “in the banking concept of education, knowledge is a gift bestowed by those who consider themselves to be knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to know nothing”. I thought that Freire said you could only receive knowledge through “invention and re-invention”. It sounds like he is contradicting himself and this is leaving me sort of confused. I don’t even know if I want to break out of my learning ways because I’ve gotten used to it. All I can say is maybe the next generation will be taught in the problem-posing method because I for one may just want to stay how I am. I will try to change and free myself from the shackles that have been holding me back all these years, but it might take a little while longer to find the right key.
