This booklet introduces you to the Part modules which will be available in the Classics Department in the 000-1 academic year. Your choice of modules depends on which degree scheme you are following; please read pp.-5 and follow the instructions there. If you are not a student within the Department, but wish to take one of the Classics modules listed on p.7, use the form to give details; you will need to have it approved by your own department. All students must undertake work which totals 10 credits during the 000-1 academic year. This will largely be made up by your choice of modules (except for students following linguistic courses), but there are some compulsory elements for particular degree schemes. The combination of modules you choose will therefore make no difference to your total workload modules weighted 40 + 40 + 40 credits will give you the same workload as modules weighted 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10.
Lectures, classes and seminars (also labelled contact hours) are all 50 minutes long. Teaching methods will vary according to the nature of the module and the number of people taking it; most modules will involve a mixture of lectures and seminars or discussion. There is a form in the centre of this booklet on which to indicate your choices for 000-1. Please return it to the Departmental Office before Wed. 17th May 000. You can change your modules in the first two weeks of the Michaelmas Term, but you MUST inform the Department and complete a Change of Module form otherwise you may be entered for the wrong exam. Your choice of modules must be approved by the Department, and it is important that you discuss it with your personal tutor before handing in your form; your tutor must sign the form.
Most modules are open to everyone with credits available, but Tragedy, Ancient Comedy and Ancient Novel are restricted to Classical Studies and some language students (however, see pp.-). Some language students means those taking Classics, Latin or Greek who have credits available for non-linguistic modules. The availability of the Ancient History core modules and of some language modules is also restricted.
If you are a Single Honours student you can, if you wish, take up to 0 credits outside the Classics Department in each year of Part (or up to 40, with the Chair of Department’s approval, in exceptional cases). If you are a Joint Honours student you can take up to 0 credits outside the Classics Department in one year of Part (and up to 0 credits outside your other department in the other year).
