The Role in Society
Women play a paradoxical role in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, a novel that is dominated by the profound narrator of the story, Nick Carraway. With the background of Gatsby’s continual and lavish parties, women seem to have been transformed into “flappers”, most likely the result of the growing manifestation of independence following WWI. The women of the Jazz Age were much different from the ones before the war began. The new age of woman arising would now be called “flappers” (About NP). This new modern woman who would take on a whole new face. Fitzgerald expresses his view of woman through two of the main characters, Daisy who is an ideal and through Jordan who is a feminist “flapper”. Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda was very important to him and he loved her dearly. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one can see similarities between Zelda and Daisy, including beauty, challenging relationships, and greediness.
Zelda Fitzgerald was a powerful woman who was very much like Daisy in the fact that they both boasted incredible beauty. The power of beauty can be an overwhelming one and many may even try to use it in a way less fashionable. This possibility is shown through two different, but very similar personalities in both Zelda and Daisy. Zelda grew up as an upper middle-class child as did Daisy (ADAH NP). However, it was the beauty that made all the guys come running to them. Zelda was a dream with red-blond hair and blue-gray eyes and she had this sort of aura about her personality that made it all the better (ADAH NP). Daisy was the same in the way she could turn heads if she wanted to, but it was not only her beauty that made men go crazy, but her voice was just as charming; an addition to her soft face. “Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth-but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget a singing compulsion.” (Fitzgerald 1-14). Daisy was a beautiful woman who could convince anyone with that asset and knew when to use her convenient quality. On the other hand, Zelda had also possessed a compelling personality, from the day she was born. As many remember her as a child, “she was raised into a free-spirited, imaginative and thoroughly spoiled woman”(“Zelda” NP). She could not be explained better because some of the decisions she made in her later life seem to prove as evidence to the statements. She was a writer, painter and dancer, and she demanded a lavish life and nothing less (“Zelda” NP). Fitzgerald loved his wife dearly, but from the novel’s standpoint, it seems as though he looks at women more as status symbols or material possessions. Daisy’s husband Tom, says, “She’s not leaving me! Not for a common swindler who’d have to steal the ring he put on her finger”(Fitzgerald 140). Tom says this in a way that gives a notion that there is no way that Daisy would leave him and that he owns her. That there is no way that she would be able to survive without him. and Zelda Daisy are both blessed with amazing beauty and charming personalities, which are somewhat deceitful. It is clear to see how Fitzgerald views women and is an example of the time period. However, the mere beauty of the two was not the only thing that made the two so similar to each other or which contributes to Fitzgerald’s viewpoint of women in the Jazz Age.
Heated relationships with their husbands was one thing that was unmistakably similar between both Zelda and Daisy. The Jazz Age was full of fun and exploration and many did not have much to complain about during this time. It was the perfect decade and it was a time of individuality and personal space. Zelda had a terribly constructed relationship with her husband F. Scott Fitzgerald. In 11, Fitzgerald went to New York to seek his fortune in order to marry Zelda. However, Zelda was a very impatient woman and broke the engagement because she did not want to wait for success (A Brief NP). Soon after Scott wrote his first novel, he became very wealthy. To no surprise, Zelda and Scott were married within weeks of the news. It is sort of disturbing to know that their relationship was not strictly based on love. From that point on, the relationship would just get worse and worse. They had more frequent disputes until it finally came down to the ultimate result. In a biography written by Matthew Bruccoli, he explains what happened, “The Fitzgerald’s had gone to France in the spring of 14 seeking tranquility. However, the marriage was damaged by Zelda’s involvement with a French aviator”(ADAH NP). The affair had definitely been detrimental to the marriage, and he could not help but to blame the entire thing on Zelda. He basically pointed her out to be a liar and unfaithful woman. The same story line occurs with Daisy’s situation. Daisy is originally in love with another character, named Gatsby. However, since Gatsby is still trying to get his priorities straight and make a success of himself, Daisy decides to marry a very wealthy man named Tom. She still loves Gatsby and now she has feelings for Tom, but it is impossible for her to have both. However, Tom does manage to achieve it, but not without Daisy knowing. The whole time while he is married to Daisy, he is seeing another woman. He has no respect for Daisy or women in general. Her relationship with Tom is in the shambles, but there is not much Gatsby can do about it. Gatsby realizes it when Daisy says that she loved him too and when she speaks with Gatsby, “Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom” (Fitzgerald 140). Daisy is fighting between two men and one who is unfaithful to her and looks at her as more of a material possession than an actual human. Tom has no respect for anyone, especially women who are looked at as being lower than himself. In one incident, he slapped the woman he was having affair with. In fact, he hit her so hard that she began to bleed. This shows just how much control he has over his emotions and how much respect he has for the female race. Both Zelda and Daisy had extreme problems with their relationships and through the relationships, it is easy to see how Fitzgerald portrays women in this instance. However, greediness was probably one of the main characteristics of both women, which made so much like each other.

At one point, Gatsby and Nick both realize it. “Her voice is full of money” (Fitzgerald 17). That innocent and charming ring in her voice was nothing but the jingle of money in her mind. They realize that the only reason the Daisy seems to stay with Tom is because of the money. In addition, it is not going to be easy for her to just leave Tom because she does still have feelings for Tom. Money completely transforms her thoughts and her once true love for Gatsby. This is the same scenario that occurs in Zelda’s story. She has an affair that does not last, but it deeply affects the marriage. She realizes that she does not want to be living under his shadow her whole life and that she wants to find her own identity (ADAH NP). She had always been a spoiled person since she was a child. Fitzgerald had written so much about the effects of money on character could not even handle his own finances. He made little more than $5,000 a year (A Brief NP). Although, this was a pretty fair amount during the time, it was not a fortune. Him and Zelda both had spent the money faster than Fitzgerald was able to make it. It was because of the money hunger and greediness that they went so far into debt and depression. Zelda had never grown up with a lot of money and the reason for her greediness is evident. She seems to have become reliant upon money alone. Arthur Schopenhauer once said, “Money is human happiness in the abstract he, then, who is no longer capable of enjoying human happiness in the concrete devotes his heart entirely to money” (Schopenhauer NP). This seems to be the quote that Zelda had followed her entire life. Money had taken over her life. Fitzgerald had perceived women as greedy individuals who could not live without material possession. Money has the power to possess people and lead their minds to spontaneous decisions, which is what Fitzgerald explains throughout his novel through the use of women as the sole money mongers.
Fitzgerald had set out to prove many points in his novel. One of which was the role of women in the Jazz Age society. His wife, Zelda, was used in the novel to portray Daisy and to show how all women were in that era. However, specifically referring to Zelda and Daisy, it is obvious that they both possessed beauty, had challenging relationships to handle, and were extremely greedy in terms of wealth. Obviously, with their beauty, they were able to manipulate people and Daisy was one of the most dishonest characters in the novel. Their upside relationships were most likely blamed on the female because she was of lesser value at the time and did not have as many rights as men. In addition, the women were very greedy. Both Zelda and Daisy grew up with a sufficient amount, but they wanted more and let money control their lives. Women were looked down upon then, but in today’s society it would be looked at as sexist. Life is an ongoing circle of fire and no matter what time, day, or age, life can take you for a ride. Sometimes it a smooth one and sometimes it’s a rough one.
