St. Boniface church is a very traditional building. Modern Catholic churches are less ornate. The most important feature in a Catholic church is the altar, as this is where Mass takes place everyday. From Monday to Saturday, only bread is received but on Sundays, both bread and wine are received because it is more important as it is the Sabbath day. Mass is important to Catholics because it reminds them of the Last Supper when Jesus changed the meaning of Passover to the crossing over from death to life and told the disciples to drink the wine and eat the bread in remembrance of him. Unlike Baptists, Catholics believe in transubstantiation (that the bread and the wine become Jesus, they don’t just represent him.) The bread they use isn’t real bread, it is wafers and the wine must be alcoholic. The tabernacle is also kept on the altar. This is important to Catholics as this is where the bread is kept. It cannot be thrown away due to transubstantiation, it would be like throwing Jesus away. The altar at St. Boniface church is very elaborate and looks like it is made of marble. The priest used to be the only person allowed into the altar area but now the rules have changed and anyone is. At this church, there are two side altars as well as the main one, which are used if there are not many people there. One of these is the Sacred Heart, where there is a statue of Jesus representing the love felt for him, and the other is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

For mass, the priest wears traditional clothing that were normal for people to wear in the 4th century but he shows how important mass is by wearing the clothes now. He wears an alb under the chasuble, a stole (like a scarf) and a chasuble over the alb and the stole. Baptist ministers dress much more plainly. Some will wear a collar and tie and others wear a clerical collar. Many will wear a black preaching gown to draw attention away from themselves and sometimes now they wear stoles which are often quite colourful.

These are the main parts to an infant baptism; the baby is given a candle to represent eternal light and that Jesus is the light of the world, the godparents promise to help look after the baby and to help to bring it up as a Christian, the priest makes the sign of the cross on the baby’s head from the font in water or oil, and water is poured over the baby’s head three times to symbolise the Holy Trinity.
