For many students, the prom and graduation remain the two most important events of senior year, although they have completely different tones.
I think theyre both sort of a stepping stone in your life and a tradition, Threlfall said. Theyll both have good memories, but proms more fun, and graduation is so serious.
Prom is kind of like the last big thing before you graduate, said Matt Feogenhauer, 17, a junior at Lewis and Clark. Graduation is saying goodbye to high school and moving on.
Some teens see the prom in a less innocent light. The dance is notoriously the big night for illegal activities like underage drinking and drug abuse. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, teen traffic fatalities on prom and graduation nights are about 5 percent alcohol-related. Alcohol and drug use also increases the incidences of other risky behaviors, including having sex.
To help prevent illicit activities, many schools hire security, and students are not allowed to wander the grounds of the dance location. But these restrictions end when students leave the dance. And some students consider booking a hotel room for prom night a common practice.
I think that some people do that, and if they want to, its their choice, Feogenhauer said. I think that people who do that on prom are the people who do that normally, and the people who dont do it normally probably arent.
I dont think my friends and I are going to rent a hotel room or anything, said Threlfall, Feogenhaeurs girlfriend.
For some deeply religious seniors, the link between the prom and sex keeps them away. They feel it would be wrong to put themselves in a position that could compromise their personal beliefs.
I was going to go with a couple of my friends, but I felt like God was telling me no, said Shannon White, who graduated from Central Valley in 00 and is now a freshman at Eastern.
They were going for the wrong reasons, and I just wanted to go and have fun and dance. They were going to -- well, (have a) normal prom night!
For Corrick, the romantic aspect of the prom is off-putting. She plans to attend the prom with a friend instead of a date.
If you go romantically, it kind of puts a damper on the evening, and things are expected at the end, she said.
There are other aspects of dating that can put a wrench in plans. Threlfall said she knows the pitfalls of a shaky relationship during the prom.
The end of my sophomore year, I went out with a senior over at Rogers, she said. I ended up going to the prom with him, and we ended up breaking up three days later.
It kind of showed me that if you just go with someone to go with someone, not really liking each other at the moment, itll wreck the whole thing. Except for my date, I had a great time.
