Blue Man Group is an amazing type of art. The show was amazing, and so many parts to the show will be remembered. One thing I noticed when I first walked in the Briar St. Theatre was a large picture of the members of the group and Jackson Pollock. After seeing the show, I was not surprised to see that picture on the wall. Both Blue Man Group and Jackson Pollock are very similar. The form of their art is very similar, in that it is messy.
When we first sat down in our seats, about twenty minutes before the show started, there was a screen (ticker) in which the audience members were supposed to read aloud as a group. What was so funny was that the comments that we, as a group read, were very random groups of words. The ticker displayed comments that were both sarcastic and amusing. The ticker announced members of the audience who were celebrating birthdays and engagements. I very much enjoyed reading along as a group the comments that the ticker displayed.
In the beginning of the show, the group splashed paint everywhere while hitting drums. During that first segment of the show, the group brought attention to the late arrivals in the audience. While reading the ticker I picked to read, it showed, “Don’t you wish you were reading the other screen,” and I couldn’t take my eyes off of the ticker I initially picked; that is how much the members of Blue Man Group captivated the audience. What also troubled me was how during one of the segments, each member of the group was spitting some sort of waste product out of a tube that was on top of their throats. What I do not understand is how the group members held the waste products, and where they were coming from. My favorite part was when a girl was picked from the audience and asked to participate in a segment up on the stage. The members of Blue Man Group and the volunteer from the audience traded Twinkies between each other and fed each other; this is the same segment that displayed the waste products emerging from the members throats.
Sitting up in the balcony allowed me to view the show from a different point. I was able to see what was going on behind the scenes, and behind the lights in the ceiling. I saw a computer technician above the stage, basically running the show. I believe he was in charge of either the lights, or the music. The music group that played along with the show was in sync with Blue Man Group. I loved the sense of teamwork that was displayed. Also, being up in the balcony gave me a bird’s eye view of the audience. At the end of the show, they used strobe lights, and each member of the audience looked as though they were in slow motion when they were pulling the toilet paper rolls from the back of the theatre. Overall, the performance was amazing, and I would love to go again, but sit in the front row, or at the least at an isle seat.
