In “A Mystery of Heroism” a soldier in the civil war named Fred Collins, is on the battlefield one day and he gets thirsty. He sees a well across the field and decides he wants to go for it. While on his way to the well he has to go through the middle of the battlefield. While many of the other soldiers believed it was foolish, others believe it is a sign of heroism. He could be a hero by the way he shows no fear crossing the battlefield. He also only thinks about getting to the water not about what could happen to him on the way to the well. Before going to the well he asked what the other soldiers thought of him going to get the water and they all told him that he was foolish. He just wanted the water for himself and his other soldiers so he went for it and he got what he wanted.
When Collins goes out into the field he is so concentrated on getting the water he doesn’t even notice the shells that are landing all around him. He only thinks about how thirsty he is and about his other soldiers that are thirsty as well. Which shows a great deal of heroism because he isn’t only thinking about himself he is thinking of his fellow soldiers back at the base waiting for Collins to get back. He knows where he wants to go and he makes it there without even realizing that he just risked his life running through the battlefield.
Also he only cared about the water he didn’t need any other reasons to get it, he only needed one reason which was he was thirsty. He didn’t even stop to think about what could have happened to him he just thought about making it to the water. Which a hero would think about getting either their own satisfaction or helping someone else achieve theirs. Many foolish people only do a heroic act to make themselves look better or just to help someone else out not for a goal just to say that they helped someone. They just try to show that they are a good person and try to help each other out.
Also Collins didn’t care about what all the other soldiers thought about him getting the water. He only thought about himself and what he wanted. When they told him not to do it he just forgot about what they said and did it anyway. Then when he returned with the water the other soldiers took it and accidentally spilled it. Wasting all the water that Collins had just risked his life for and all of it was for nothing. Saying that none of the other soldiers were brave enough to go after what they wanted but they would allow someone else to get it for them.
