Materialism is the theory that matter is the reality. The wealthy have always been associated with materials, and believing that they are important. This life is surrounded by big, fancy, houses and bright, shiny cars. This also represents a life where dreams are reality and reality is a dream. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, symbolism such as gold, green and white are repeatedly displayed throughout the novel to develop the theme of materialism of the wealthy.

The colors, gold and yellow represent wealth, respect and triumph of the American dream. Gatsby’s house shows exactly what he has and nothing less. “His [Gatsby] bedroom was the simplest room of all- except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold”(7). Gatsby uses everything he has to show that he has conquered the American dream. He purchases material of pure gold to show off his riches and hard work. He thinks that purchasing gold materials will lead him to his unconquered dream of having Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby drives a flashy car to catch the admiring eyes of the public.

It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hatboxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of windshields that mirrored a dozen suns.(68)

Gatsby chooses the bright color yellow to show off his wealth. He has boxes and blinding objects in his already flashy car to flag down anyone unknown of him and his wealth. Gatsby’s materialistic car proves his need to let everyone see what he has. He knew that if Daisy saw his car she would be so blinded by all the fantastic objects and beautiful color not to notice its wealth. Gatsby throws extravagant parties to show off the wealth through out his mansion, and in hopes that Daisy will attend. “The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music and the opera of voices pitches a key higher”(44). Gatsby invites all the men and women who have achieved the American dream to his parties to show off and gain respect for his wealth. He deliberately invites these guests to attend his parties and does not attend them himself. Gatsby doesn’t care about knowing the people as long as they know of him. He uses everything and everyway possible to show that he is a wealthy man who has conquered what everyone wants, the American dream. Gatsby’s view and use of materials in his house and car show his wealth and triumph over the American dream.

Gatsby revolves his life around his past obsession and dream of being reunited with Daisy. Gatsby spends every night starring out over the dock at his dream. “Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute a far away, that might have been the end of a dock”(6). The green light that Gatsby lives his life around is the light that shines on Daisy’s dock. This light represents wealth and riches in which he thinks he needs, before he gets Daisy. This materialistic dream forces Gatsby to purchase a house across the bay from Daisy’s, and stare across her dock. Gatsby’s room is filled with a large amount of clothing piled everywhere. “While we admired he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher-shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple green” […](7-8). Gatsby not only decorates his house and car to depict his social status, but also spreads his excessive amount of clothing around his room. He does this when giving Daisy a tour of his mansion to give her another clue that he has everything that she wants. Gatsby knew clearly that he wanted Daisy, but what he did not know is that he lost her years ago. Nick narrates,[…] I thought of Gatsbys wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisys dock [....] his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him […]”(18). Gatsby thinks that if he could conquer the American dream then he would have conquered his dream for Daisy. When he reached his goal of wealth he felt that he was closest he would be to having her. He fails to understand that he is living his life through the past. He does not get that Daisy has moved on since they last saw each other. Unfortunately Gatsby has not moved on at all. Even though Daisy is married, Gatsby believes that he can buy her as if she was one of his useless materials.

The color white represents the false purity of Gatsby, Daisy and all the other men and women of East Egg. The wealthy surround themselves in magnificent beauty. “Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water […]”(10). Gatsby and everyone else in East Egg surround themselves in wholesome, white purity. Gatsby originally bought his white palace because it was directly across the bay from Daisy. He knew that once Daisy saw his house she would be struck by its beauty and not be able to resist his riches. Gatsby tries to cover his none wholesomeness with white purity. “An hour later the front door opened nervously and Gatsby in a white flannel suit, silver shirt and gold colored tie hurried in”(8). Gatsby wears a white suit to make him look wholesome, pure and rich. He tries to make himself look naturally wealthy and pure by wearing the color white. Gatsby covers up his real profession of being a bootlegger. He constantly has to hide his dirty ways to conquering his wealth with fake purity. Daisy owns the most materials, in the color that hides the real her, best. ”She [Daisy] dressed in white and had a little white roadster […]”(7). Daisy, like Gatsby covers a different kind of false purity. Daisy wears white and drives her white car to cover up her greediness of others wealth and materials. She married Tom for his wealth, but still tries to live through her child like purity. She tries to hide her adultery, murder and dishonesty acts behind the pureness of white. Unlike Gatsby, Daisy grew up into her fortune and does not need to hide her pure inheritance, just her wrong doings behind it all.

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, symbolism such as gold, green and white are repeatedly displayed throughout the novel to develop the theme of materialism of the wealthy. Gatsby conquered having materials and wealth for everyone but himself. He knew that the green light would come only as a pair with the success of wealth. The wealthy believe that they can buy anything with money, but love can not be bought. The wealthy have and will always be associated with materials and believing that materialism is the key.
