The word love is almost impossible to define. Does anyone really understand what love is or what it means to our lives? There are so many questions left unanswered concerning the topic. What makes love happen? How long does love last? What makes love stop? The list goes on and on. In today’s society, it is almost impossible for one to pinpoint the exact answer to any of these questions. We use the term love in such a sloppy way, that it can mean absolutely nothing or absolutely everything.
People often say things like, “I love chocolate ice cream,” or, “I love that shirt.” Does this person actually feel a deep, emotional connection to ice cream? I very seriously doubt it, but I bet we are all guilty of using this type of expression every day. To use the word love in such a nonchalant way about such trivial things seems to make it less meaningful. If a woman hears her significant other say something along the lines of, “I love Bud Light beer,” and then say ten minutes later to her, “Honey, I love you,” will she be a little reluctant to believe him? Will she believe him, but find no comfort in being told that someone feels the same way toward her as he does toward a can of beer? These reactions are both highly possible today with the way we throw the word love around as if it means nothing.
As I sit here thinking about all of the people in my life that I care about, I wonder if I am doing them some type of injustice by saying I love them. It used to mean a lot to say to someone, “I love you.” What does it mean, anyway? Does the phrase even have any emotional significance anymore? Maybe I would be able to hold it up to the same caliber that I used to if the word wasn’t a part of everyone’s every day vocabulary. I used to think love was a special word that one should only use on the most intense and unique of occasions, but now, it seems to be used in almost every situation. “I love that movie,” or, “Oh, Meghan, I love your hair.” These are things I have actually said in the last few days. I certainly don’t feel the same toward my friend’s hair as I do toward my mother, so why do I say these kinds of things? Because it has become “the norm.”
Every day people misuse the term love, and this has certainly affected the way I think about it. The word means almost nothing anymore, and that is almost sad. Now, I fear when I tell my boyfriend, friends, or family that I love them, it won’t mean anything to them. The way we use the word about everything in our lives, makes it seem to have little or no importance. Love is supposed to be a beautiful word that has deep meaning, but we have transformed that meaning, and now, it’s the same as every other word in our vocabulary.
