Abortion Cancer ? The Link Between Induced Abortion and Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a grave health issue in the U.S. The National Cancer Institute reports that 1 in every 8 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (Rice 1). Even though the risk is exaggerated by certain pro-life groups, several scientific studies show that indeed there is a clear link between abortion and breast cancer. In fact, 4 of the studies, released in medical journals, show a conclusive link between induced abortion and increased risk for breast cancer (Brind 1). The possible link between abortion and an increased risk of breast cancer deserves much attention, and information regarding this risk must be made available to all women considering an abortion.

Author and pro-choice advocate Joyce Arthur unfairly ignores an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence in order to draw seemingly biased conclusions in her essay, “Abortion and Breast Cancer A Forged Link.” Ms. Arthur goes as far as to assert that link between abortion and breast cancer is a “scaremongering”, “grossly deceptive claim” (Arthur 1). This simply is not true.

The first published findings on this topic date back to 181. That year, USC doctor, M.C. Pike published the results of his study. Dr. Pike studied 167 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. His results showed that women who had aborted their first pregnancy had a 50% greater risk of developing breast cancer (Wilke ).

This study was largely overlooked for many years. However, in 1 Dr. Joel Brind, a professor of biology and endocrinology at New York’s Baruch College began studying the topic extensively (Arthur ). Brind’s research team conducted several meta-analyses surveys about the subject. These surveys showed that having an abortion increased a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 0%-40%. In her essay, Joyce Arthur claimed that Dr. Brind and his scientists used out-dated sources and inconclusive studies which offered no new information. Brind countered, however, that by definition meta-analyses surveys provide no new information. The importances of such studies lie in showing the shear amount of reliable research which had demonstrated a link between abortion and breast cancer.

Although Ms. Arthur contends that such studies are used as widespread scare tactics on prospective abortion patients, in reality very few prospective patients have ever heard of such studies. In fact most women considering abortions are never informed of this possible risk (Brind 1). Certainly logic would demand that such information must be made available to all prospective patients. However, Ms. Arthur asserts that informing women would only turn them into “frightened pawns”. The logic behind this is befuddling. Legitimate medical evidence cannot be ignored just because it is “scary”. Joyce Arthur also states, “even if Brind’s abortion/breast cancer link is real...he claims that abortion may boost the risk of breast cancer by 0%, but this increase is not really that significant” (Arthur ). Once again, this is untrue. A 0% risk factor is definitely enough to cause alarm (Brind 1).

Well, in spite of what Ms. Arthur would have one believe, the evidence has garnered much interest in the medical community. In September of 1, New Jersey breast surgeon, Dr. Angela Lanfranchi, wrote an open appeal to the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She pleaded with them inform the public of the risks involving abortion and breast cancer. Shockingly, Dr. Lanfranchi has stated, under oath, that the president of the ASBS, Dr. Rachel Simmons, told her the topic was “too political” (Rice 1)

Dr. Brind and Dr. Lanfranchi are not alone. Dr. Chris Kahlenhorn, once a skeptic, researched the topic simply to satisfy his curiosity, and ended up authoring the book Breast Cancer It’s link to Abortion and the Birth Control Pill (Rice ). Dr. Elizabeth Shadagian, a clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan testified, under oath, that “induced abortion causes an increased risk of breast cancer” (Rice ). Dr. Jose Bufill, a professor at Indiana University Medical School has been quoted as saying, “there is clinical research data suggesting that…induced abortion may predispose women to a specific form of breast cancer unique to a particular carcinogenic pathway” (Rice ).

I believe that this subject must be regarded from an absolutely objective stand point. Religion and morality must not play a role either way. There is a link between breast cancer and induced abortion, and all patients are entitled to this information. The claims are not only coming from fundamentalist, right-wing groups as some would attest, but rather from reputable physicians who are leaders in their fields. The decision to have an abortion is not an easy one, nor is it one to be taken lightly. Therefore, all women who are considering this option should be afforded all possible information. The idea that these findings would be suppressed as being “too political” is insane. This issue needs be treated with the same respect and sense of urgency as any other medical discovery of this magnitude.
