THE BIBLE AND THE GUN

The Bible and the Gun film is an interesting film about British missionaries and settlers that went to Africa after slavery ended in the nineteenth century. Slavery robbed Africa of tens of thousands of its people. Before slavery, the African people were viewed as equals by others that interacted with them. It seems that racism grew directly out of slavery. Whites began to think of slaves as less than them. This became the normal way of thinking and they began to believe that they were better than Africans. When the missionaries and colonists arrived in Africa after the Trans Atlantic slave trade ended, they brought that attitude with them. They thought they were superior to the natives and in their minds, they came to convert the uncivilized, downtrodden, and spiritually ignorant Africans. African traditional religions were to be destroyed.

The missionaries felt it was necessary to rid the African people of their traditional beliefs and religions. I believe they did this to make it easier to dominate the people and take over their vast lands and minerals. The missionary teachings were really all about colonization. Missionaries believed that Africans who converted to Christianity would be likely to see the value of colonial rule and would not oppose British rule. Many missionaries considered African cultures and religions to be primitive and pagan. Consequently, they tried to force Africans to reject most of their cultural and religious beliefs and practices. They were preaching about the equality of men while practicing discrimination. Their contempt for Africans outweighed their religious beliefs. Even David Livingston, an explorer and great friend to the natives, believed that Africans were inferior, but through Christianity and commerce they could be made equal to whites.

Many Africans fought the attempts of the British to convert them to Christianity. They were distrustful of the whites. But the missionaries goal was to convert them and they intended to do just that. Therefore, force was often used to persuade the natives. They were flogged and brute force was often used. Their culture had to be drained and destroyed. to ensure success in colonizing. It reminds me of what happened to the tribes in Things Fall Apart. Once the missionaries succeeded in gaining converts, the village started to fall apart. They people were separated and things began to drastically change in the tribe. The missionaries built schools wherever they settled in Africa to teach the natives. I feel this was all part of the plan to help convert the people to Christianity. The people needed to be able to read in order to study the Bible that the missionaries introduced to them. Ironically, some of the Africans they educated turned out to be advocates against British rule.

I learned a great deal from this film. It gave me the opportunity to see the effects the missionaries had on African religion. The biggest mistake the Africans made was letting white missionaries settle on their land. They stole their land through deceit and dishonesty. They even resorted to pitting tribes against each other to eventually obtain the land that was rich with oil, diamonds, gold and cattle. One African man said that after the British took over, the natives were taxed and allowed to keep only one beast per child. I find that appalling. I’m not saying that converting the people to Christianity was all wrong but the motivation and ultimate results were. The people were no longer free to govern themselves and the fabric of their culture was nearly been destroyed. Over the years, many Africans mixed their religions with Christianity and were able to hold on to some of their culture.

This film relates to the African Traditional Religions course in that it shows how other religions affected the traditional beliefs of the Africans. It helps explain the geographical makeup of religions in Africa today and how they developed.
