Practice Critique

Jesse Jackson, a US democrat, delivers a clear, well developed speech “Who Makes the Clothes We wear” addressing American voters. He makes them aware of large companies that use sweatshops in which humans rights are being violated to produce the clothes we are buying.

Would the consumers still buy Gap t-shirts, Nike shoes, or Neiman Marcus designer fashions if they were aware of the inhuman conditions of the workers that are producing them? All over the world, private corporations are “trampling the rights of their workers in sweatshops.

As this issue is brought to public’s attention Nike and other such companies are getting afraid that such a scandal would waste all the money spent on advertisement.

To worsen the situation, Republicans are accused of opposing laws that would give protection to worker’s rights, furthermore, they object to workers’ voting for a representative that will ensure their safety. However, if unions of consumers were to denounce one famous brand name, all other companies will “rush to clean up their act”. It should be noted that these practices aren’t profitable to these large companies since a very small percent of the money spent by Nike on their advertisement campaign could bring those Indonesian women’s salaries to the minimum salary rate. Therefore, consumers informed of these facts can start to make the companies pay more for not considering human rights than they would have by having respected theses rights at the beginning.

The author’s thesis is not clearly stated, it can be inferred from the text that Jackson aims to inform American voters about the sweatshops, and the workers’ conditions imposed by the “high profit, high profile” companies. In his argumentation, he addresses his audience starting with numerous rhetorical questions to make people fell involved and to draw their attention to a specific problem “Would you give Nike 80$ for a pair… for less than Indonesia’s miserable minimum wage?” He elaborates his ideas in short paragraphs each consisting of a specific idea, giving examples “El Monte California” in which the topic sentence is inferred from the paragraph itself.

Jackson argues accusing Republicans of supporting the large companies “Republicans are blocking efforts…” then he argues that Unions or consumer groups can make a difference in this situation. He finally demonstrates that the motive for such practices is purely arrogance supporting his idea by giving figures, thereby “1% of the Nike advertising budget” can make a significant difference for the Indonesian women workers. In his claim he tries to reach the audience’s emotions as well as their sense of ethics.

The author starts his speech with an informal style “teenage girls” and addresses the consumers directly by “you” and then gradually moves to a more formal, technical and concrete choice of words targeted for the American voters only since he doesn’t define any of the political terms he uses such as “Republicans, conservatives”. He uses simple sentences in his speech “the companies have grown arrogant in their global reach”. In his conclusion, he emphasizes the importance of consumer’s awareness to make the companies stop theses practices and make “trampling the basic decency” more expensive than having respected it in the first place.

He uses many negative connotations when he is referring to the companies that will “rush to clean up their act” suggesting that they will hurry to clean up their filthy practices. As well as his reference to Gingrich who “scurries” to get in front of the parade. Scurry is a pejorative verb used for rodents or rats that walk hurriedly and its use in the sentence gives this person a very negative image.

The speech is overall well structured, the use of short paragraphs consisting of simple sentences is essential for the audience to keep up with the track of ideas presented to them. His arguments are generally well supported by numbers and values “4. billion in sales, 5 cents per hour for 16 to hours a day”. However his speech lacks statistics representing percentages of companies that engage in such practices in the US. The author’s argumentative style is strongly convincing; his claim reaches both audiences’ emotions and morals which will make them react to the situation. To be noted that he over generalizes his claim when accusing all large companies of following this sweatshop practice, this would lessen his arguments’ validity.

Many newspaper articles tackle such issues and they suggest that the workers in the sweatshops are mainly Hispanic illegal immigrants that work in inhuman conditions in underground warehouses where it is either too cold or too hot. Their safety isn’t ensured, most of the times there aren’t any proper fire escapes.

In conclusion, in this essay are clearly exposed the illegal practices of large worldwide corporate and the importance of consumer’s awareness of this situation to make a change in this situation that is also taking place in other parts of the world.

The speech is overall well supported although lacking some statistics.
